We've begun our dystopian novel this week. By next Friday, April 28, we should be finishing chapter 8. If you are absent click HERE for a copy, or chec out a book from the library to read at home. I only have a class set, so I can not give you a book to take home. Also, please do not read ahead. We want to do this as a class and it takes the fun out of it for you and the others. I'm attaching some of the worksheets in the order we will use them. Homework this week can be found here. It is due Monday, May 1. We will be using the short story, There Will Come Soft Rains by Ray Bradbury to introduce our new unit called SEARCH for TOMORROW. This is a futuristic story with lots of examples of personification and irony. We'll also analyze the poem by the same name written by Sara Teasdale. Click here for a copy of the text. We are reading "Saying Farewell to a Faithful Pal" to wrap up our Waves of Change unit.
Our first activity will be this Walkabout Preview. Then we will attempt a Triad protocol, where you will read chunks of the text and one partner will share with your group one thing that stood out and why. The other partners will paraphrase what you said and make inquires. Then your group will continue this process until the text is complete. Book report is due Monday. If you have not finished it,please turn it in ASAP!
Here is a copy of the Rubric I gave out in class. We will be reading Barrio Boy this week. (Click the title to see a coy of the text.) It is another example of a memoir. We'll be using the text evidence to support a claim. Here is a link to the worksheet we will complete in class. Sooooo if you are absent, please get this done. The text we will be focusing on this week is the poem, How I Learned English by Gregory Djanikian.
We will be using the SIFT method to analyze the poem for Symbols, Imagery, Figurative Language and Tone & Theme. If time allows we will read another short memoir, Barrio Boy, which describes another immigrant's experience of coming to America. On Friday we will have a quiz on the 2 memoirs and poem. As we continue our Waves of Change unit,the text we are reading this week is "My First Free Summer" Julia Alvarez and her family have to flee the Dominican Republic and come to live in America. Vocabulary that students will be expected to know are:writhing, desperation, contradict, unravel, interrogate, and summon. You should be able to answer cause and effect questions such as: Julia is having a boring summer because... The Alverez family is leaving for the US on such a short notice because..... Because Julia's father is involved in the plot to over through the dictator, it effects Jullia's life by .... We are reading Suzy and Leah. Next week we will have a test on both the story and poem. This week we are geginning a new unit called, Waves of Change. It's seems appropriate for this month and this time in our history. We'll be reading about Slavery, The Civil Rights Movement as well as a short historical fictioan about a German refugee after WWII

So this week we will go a little deeper and use this theme in a writing lesson. We'll be discussing how to write an argumentative essay. We'll talk about claims, counterclaims, evidence and reasons. Then we'll read a few short articles on conformity and finally write a short essay on your opinion about it. |
